I am glad that you have had good experiences with BD - they do have a good reputation some of the time, which is why I went with them in the first place.
To answer your questions - no proxy server, and also tried everything with and without firewalls. I’ve also heard about the computer battery problem affecting some people, but wasn’t the issue for me. But, you raise good points for others to consider.
I’ve not posted continued problems with BD because I am just tired of dealing with it. It worked fine for a month or so, but then the last few months it has gone downhill with a new host of problems.
A couple times a week it just stops working and gives me the grey box of death that vsserve.exe isn’t working … reboot. Grrr. Sometimes it doesn’t automatically load on reboot - a new symptom the last couple weeks. I have reinstalled twice over the last couple months just to get it to work again - it seems to lose the ability to perform updates. And the last week, it “forgot” all of my custom scans so nothing was automatically scanned, and then last weekend it “remembered” them all again.
I’ve just limped it along until I have time to find another solution. BD gave me an extra year free so I don’t have to do anything now, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Thanks for sharing
I have red with great interest your very frustrating (indeed!!) “love story” with BitDefender. But I think the problem was much simpler than it seemed at first. Same thing happened to a friend of mine and he had a lot of trouble identifying the source of the problem. First, he found out that he had on his computer installed a program(a desktop gadget) that was incompatible with BitDefender which caused a lot of issues. After solving that one he also changed the computer battery and after that everything worked just fine.
I’ve heard that the support is sometimes overloaded(personally, I had a good experience with the Client Support) but I think BitDefender is the best anti-virus I’ve ever had(catches more viruses than the other solutions I’ve tried). It’s possible that you encountered those issues because of your battery.(did you change it?)Still, I need to ask, do you connect to the internet through a proxy server? As far as I know, that might be a problem when you’re trying to enter into your account through the BitDefender interface and you have to do that directly from the site.
I see you published your article a few months ago, what about now?Is your BitDefender working properly?I ask you because I’m passionate with viruses and anti-virus solutions and I want to know more about what happened, what are the best features and the flaws of the product.]]>
I see you are as frustrated as I was. I am still not happy with BD but muck with it just to keep it kind-of working. I have to babysit it, actually, and sometimes find it decides not to update or not to scan. But since I got it mostly working, I have decided not to spend any more time on it.
Last week it decided to stop scanning and I had to reinstall it. But at least I got error messages that a scan could not be started due to some maximum time delay from scan scheduled time. Sigh. Reinstalling worked but it took time to reset all my custom scans.
But I think you would not be happy with this solution. If it really causes you a lot of grief and you don’t trust it, search for a different solution. Don’t worry about the cost of the 2-year license - if you find a better tool, then the peace-of-mind should be worth the price of a new license.
I have been a McAfee user for 3 years and when my reg key expired I decided to switch to the bitdefender total security swuite 2009 mainly because of rave reviews I read on PC World, etc sites. Plus when I used the free bitdefender scan online it caught viruses my McAfee never did.
So I bought a full package from Staples(Business Depot) store here in Canada 2 days ago (apr 30/2009) and got after a clean reformatting I installed this.
After a few updates it had a message: ” BitDefender Services have been temporarily shut down due to an update” I searched online and found various folks complaining about this. If I had known about all this I would have stayed with mcafee suite and just used the free online bitdefender scan. Staples will not refund opened computer software but only exchanges for the same if the disk is defective but from what I am gathering this is a problem with bitdefender itself.
I am not tech savvy in anyway. Im a writer (arts and humanities at university all the way) even my reformatting was done by my brother before I reinstalled all dell drivers etc and finally the new bitdefender.
Can you please tell me what I can do? any ideas. I am stuck with a 2 year key here and now am scared it will be out of service everynow and then after updates when I leave my comp unattended and on as I have to due to my work. Is there some sort of patch they have given you (Im only asking because I see your last entry is several days ago). after I reboot its back to normal.
I read the all wise ‘eidtors” articles at pc today, pc advisor etc that bitdefender is waaaay better than mcafee. But Mcafee never shut its system on me! When bitdefender did it I checked and ALL services including the firewall was shut off!!!
Id really appreciate any advice or help!
